Function of dialysis
Dialysis takes care of eliminating waste products and liquids from the blood that the kidneys cannot eliminate. It also helps to maintain an equilibrium in the body and it corrects the levels of diverse toxic substances in the blood. Without this dialysis process, all those patients with terminal renal failure would die due to the accumulation of toxins in the blood.
The fundamentals of dialysis
There are two modes of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Dialysis is designed to substitute certain functions of the kidneys. The treatment has to eliminate waste products and excess liquid, and toe balance the amount of electrolytes and other substances in the body. For an efficient dialysis, a semi-permeable membrane, blood, dialysis liquid, and a method for eliminating excess liquid are needed.
How dialysis works
During dialysis, a semi-permeable membrane separates the blood from the dialysis liquid. This membrane allows only some substances to pass through; concretely, the waste products, water, electrolytes, and other substances manage to pass from the blood to the dialysis liquid (and sometimes in the opposite direction) by means of a process called diffusion.
The movement of waste products and other substances depends in great part on the permeability of the membrane, the size and structure of the substances, the dialysis liquids make up, and also the amount of blood that is in contact with the membrane.
The greater the amount of blood that comes into contact with the membrane, the greater the efficiency of the dialysis treatment. In hemodialysis, the amount of blood given can be controlled through the dialysis machine.
Elimination of the liquid
In hemodialysis, the dialysis machine uses pressure to extract the liquid from the blood through a membrane so that the dialysis liquid passes.
Goal of dialysis
The goal is to eliminate waste products and excess liquid, and at the same time correct the unbalances of the electrolytes and the pH of the body.
